A very long day
Today started at about 6am PST. I'm still adjusting to West Coast time, so being up at 6am is actually a lot easier then it sounds. Granted, I had been sleeping only intermittently between 3am and 6am, so it was still pretty early, and I didn't sleep much. Today's to-do list read as such:

  • Check out of hotel
  • Forward salary confirmation letters to landlord company
  • Get Gas turned on
  • Get Electric turned on
  • Get internet turned on
  • Acquire renter's insurance
  • Get cashier's check or money order for ~$1800
  • Shop for furniture
  • Acquire temporary beds

After checking out of the hotel, we were pretty much committed to getting all of the things done on there which would allow us to actually "move in" to our new apartment. Which is to say, have a place to drop our luggage we brought with us on the plane. Everything actually went pretty smoothly ... until we got to the point of getting a hold of the cashier's check/money order. Part of the relocation involved [info]jearil being given a lump sum of money to handle the big chunk of money that's required to get a new place. This money was having difficulty being deposited into his bank account. The money from the sale of his motorcycle also hadn't hit yet, so he had money transferred in, and all was set. We go to the Post Office to get a money order using his debit card. Ahead of time, he called his Credit Union and explained to them that he was about to put a large charge on the card from out of state, and that this was not a cause for concern. Well, when the time came, his debit card was declined. He called the CU, and was informed that A) they (the CU) doesn't allow the use of debit cards at Post Offices and Casinos for money orders, and B) that there is a limit of $500/day for use of the card as a debit card. We also found out that this attempted transaction, despite his call ahead warning put a freeze on the card, making it completely useless. After having spent the day running around doing and putting all of the other things together, it was now already about 2pm PST ... which meant that the CU, which is based in NY was pretty much shut down because it was closing time. We came back to the rental place and explained the situation, and were informed that we could use a credit card to make the initial payment for an extra fee. At this point, this was fine. We also confirmed that Jearil's card was frozen not only for debiting but for crediting as well. Luckily, I had made sure to keep my own credit limit mostly free for any emergencies that came up during our move, so we were able to get the money paid, and were able to move into this really neat apartment.

I really like it. It is a bit on the higher side of the rent then I was hoping for, but the place is spacious, has its own washer/dryer, and is in a really nice area in Burbank. We were able to acquire air mattresses to sleep on for the next few nights, as we wait for our stuff to arrive. I am thinking that I might use some of my extra money from my pay increase to actually get a new bed and frame, but I think I need to get a new desk first. I definitely need one that can fit two monitors, and my laptop so that I can be working on both at the same time. It's finally starting to hit me that I'm out here for real. Even though the place is still fairly empty ... I'm no longer in a hotel, and that seems to make all the difference. Now ... if only I can get Jon to actually call me back so we can see each other again ...

At the moment, I am borrowing from Trisha. All I know about her is that she lives nearby, and named her wireless access point but didn't end up putting any encryption on it. :)

Pretty much, yes. We still have a few errands to run today, but so far, it's looking like it'll be at least a week of living in an empty apartment as we wait for our stuff to arrive.
